Large format photography commission for an architect firm.
In the clients words, the brief was to make something that is: “…abstract (-ish), ridiculously romantic in its rendering of something utilitarian and mundane, architectural, reminiscent of the 18th century drawings of Piranesi, considerably more stimulating to look at than the bland abstract architectural crap that you might see in a home furnishing shop”. Working with K2 Architects offered a good creative starting point — to inspire through artwork rather than document their portfolio. This posed an interesting question: What are the essential elements behind what an architecture firm does.
The raw construction of industrial spaces highlight the frameworks behind the facades we see on architecture. Containers are like building blocks — cranes and conveyors show how weight, balance and counterbalance are distributed. Amongst the rigidity there is always a need for flexibility in order to function.
The industrial sites connect the client with Liverpool’s heritage as a port city. A selection of images were printed in large format and hung in the firms offices.
