A photo and text essay about one of Korea’s largest fish markets, produced for the LOOK/15 Photo Biennial.
First opened in 1927 in central Seoul, Noryangjin is one of the largest fish and seafood markets in Korea. In 1971 it was relocated to south west of the city, close to the Han River and opposite Noryangjin metro station. Approximately 60% of Korea’s seafood passes through 6,000m2 of market stalls, auction vendors and restaurants on-site.
Noryangjin has similar notoriety to the worlds largest fish market, Tsukiji in Tokyo. Both have the combined status of industrial age work place and cult tourist attraction. At the time of undertaking the markets were pending relocation to newly built facilities. At Noryangjin, the goal was to understand further the existing social and cultural context within the market and how it relates to modern life.
The photo and text essay Noryangjin was produced for the LOOK/15 Photo Biennial under the theme of Exchange, with a focus on “women, migration and memory”. It is divided into three parts: Delivery & auction, Office hours and Dinner - documenting a day in the life of the market and its people. It is one of the last essays compiled before the market moved to its new facility in 2016.
