Creative direction for a UK-based charity who specialise in art therapy in prisons.
RiseUp work with prisons and probation services across the UK to deliver art therapy programs that engage with those who are hardest to reach in society. Founders Ashleigh Nugent and Stuart Coady were very keen to present themselves as a creative organisation rather than a corporate one. There were elements of their existing brand identity which are inherently personal to them — such as the RiseUp logo. The goal was to bring the same level of creativity and meaning to the design of their training materials.
The photographic commission was to illustrate the central theme of their course: Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey. The sequence of 12 images visually capture each step of Campbell’s monomyth. Creative director Ashleigh is an award-winning author, playwright and rapper. He is the central character in the photographs — providing a focal point for the course material. It demonstrates a personal connection between what RiseUp say, and what RiseUp do.
Together with the graphic design and creative photography — standard headshots for all directors were required. RiseUp work within narrow parameters. They are both an informal creative group — and recognised as credible professionals in a highly demanding sector. The work we produced respects this and aims to achieve a balance between these two elements.
