A compilation of studies into the landscapes of China, Korea, and Japan.
From mythical rock formations of Zhangjiajie, to the blank canvases of Hokkaido in the winter, Sketches of East Asia is a compilation of studies into the landscapes of China, Korea, and Japan.
There are many theories on the distribution of space in visual language. In some places it is intrinsic to national identity. The ink wash paintings of the East Asian landscape consider the void to be an essential element, as much as the mountain or tree represented in the painting. The sophisticated simplicity of Sumi paintings came before principles of abstraction and the appeal of minimalism found prominence in the West.
Each Sketches of series brings together Germanic form language with this Eastern aesthetic, resulting in a constructivist approach to subject and void which is more orderly than harmonious, noting the difference in spatial theory between East and West.
Approaching this format with a tool based on mechanics adds another layer of modernity to the process, but within the image the aim is to find balance between our respective languages of vision.
