Rapid Survey

A quick and simple test to stretch out of convergent thinking and remove creative roadblocks.

Exercise

Rapid Survey.

Time Limit

3 minutes.

Aims and Objectives

The challenge is to spontaneously survey a subject — photographing it 36 different ways. This number is referential to photography. The most common film format was 35mm — with each roll of film capturing 36 frames. When photographing a subject or sequence; the documentary impulse might consume a full roll of film in a matter of minutes. But how easy is it?

The primary objective is to deliver a quantity and variety of images, not quality. Choose a subject: human or object, and create a survey of different angles and compositions in the allotted time. The aim is to think divergently. You can be reactive and methodical, but also open to possibilities.

Don’t worry about perfection, it will only slow you down.

Requirements

Any camera device.

Output

You should produce 36 images that collectively offer a wide variety of points of view. It is not necessary to download or publish the images. The purpose is for you to reflect on your own process after employing it under a time limit. When the time is up, look at the images on your camera device before self-assessing your results.

Upon reflection you may want to consider the ways that you didn’t try previously, or understand better any mental blocks you had completing the task.

Once you have completed the exercise use the self-assessment page to reflect on your approach.
